Best of Keeping Drinks Cool in Your Deck Box

With the purchase of your deck box, your entire patio seems complete. Now you have the perfect bench to tie everything together, as well as the perfect place to store all your favorite items you will need to get through the summer days. While your box works like the perfect blessing, it can also curse you with what seems like less space overall on your deck. On the days you're grilling out, you'll find that you have ice chests full of meat and beverage, but they get in the way of your flow of traffic. There should be a way to consolidate and bring everything together, right?

If you have a deck box, and want to make it an ice box during the summer, there are several easy ways to make sure you are getting the best of both worlds. Yes, you too can have a consolidated patio that brings about all the great aspects of summer in one convenient box. While it may sound rather ambitious, bringing it all together just takes a little ingenuity and good old-fashioned know how.

Regardless of what your deck box is made of, making a cooler out of it is not as hard a process as it sounds. Both plastic and wood boxes serve as great insulators to keep the cold inside without having your watery problems leak out. The result: cold drinks surrounded by even colder ice, kept cool for hours at a time. The only major difference in the two possible materials (plastic or wood) is how we will approach turning your deck box into a deck cooler.

If you have a plastic deck box, all of the work of sealing in the cold has been done for you, as plastic is naturally resistant to water. To turn your box into a cooler, first clean it out with warm water and a mild cleaner, like a dish soap (because nobody wants to drink dirty beverages). Once you are done, fill it with ice and enjoy your cold drinks at anytime! Once the ice is melted away, and to remove the remaining water from the ice, simply tip over gently, and let the water flow onto your lawn.

If you have a deck box made of wood, turning it into a cooler will take an extra step, but will be well worth it once you have a consolidated patio space. Many wood boxes come with snaps around the inner edge. This allows you to install a vinyl liner, which makes it easier to store ice inside the cooler, without letting it soak into or around your wood. Simply snap the liner around the edge, fill with ice, and enjoy! Once you are done, unsnap the edges, carry the water in the liner to an appropriate dumping place, and let the water go.

If your deck box didn't come pre-installed with snaps to install one of these crucial liners, don't worry about it too much. If you have a smaller deck box, there is still hope to consolidate everything together. With a little ingenuity, you too can still make a cooler out of your deck box. To start, take a heavy-duty trash bag that will fit inside your deck box. If you have old blankets laying around that you don't worry over too much, pack them around the edges - this will serve as additional insulation, and protect from any stray beads of water dripping into your box. Cut the trash bag down from the opening, and fit the trash bag in snugly around your blankets. Add ice, and you've just created an ice chest! To empty, just remove the trash bag and dispose at will.

As the famous old adage goes, "Less is More." This has never been quite as true with a deck box, as they allow you to have more fun with taking up less room at the same time!

Adorable Pond Liner Repair

Repairing a liner is possible in most cases with a liquid EPDM material. EPDM is a kind of synthetic rubber. It is liquid until a catalyst is added that causes it to harden.

The synthetic rubber liners are considered the most durable. They are water and heat resistant. It is resistant to the fading caused by UV light. It rarely tears, because of its high tensile strength. But, a torn liner is the most common cause of a pond leak.

Pond Pro 2000 is the brand name of the liquid EPDM material. Once it cures it is safe for fish and plant life. Not only can it be used to repair liners, it can also be used to repair concrete, metal, fiberglass and fabric. So if you have a cracked bird bath, fountain or fiberglass pool, the liquid rubber will still work.

If your pond liner is composed of EPDM, it can be torn by sharp objects and start to leak. When that happens, many people think they will need to replace the whole liner, which is sometimes quite expensive. There is another alternative.

Application of the liquid results in a seamless self-adhering rubber membrane, once it cures. It is very similar to the original EPDM liner and has the same advantages.
Rubbers swell when they come into contact with oils, waxes and fats. In some cases, thats what causes the liners to tear.

In order to use the liquid for pond repair, you will need to remove all fish and plants. The pond will need to be drained completely or at least down to the area where the rip is located.

Its a good idea to wait for a warm day. The curing process is faster at temperatures of 70 degrees and above. You should not apply Pond Pro 2000 when rain is expected within 24 hours. So be sure to check the weather forecast.

The surface of the material to be coated should be cleaned of all dirt and debris. It can be applied with a brush, roller just as you would apply paint.

Once the area has been prepared, you will mix the catalyst included in the package. There is enough room in the can to allow for the catalyst to be added.

A xylene solvent can be used to clean up spills or tools. Xylene can also be used for thinning, in the event that the coating becomes too thick for easy application.
Save your pond liner with Pond Pro 2000. Dont throw it away.
Pond Pro is a liquid version of EPDM very similar to EPDM pond liners sold in pond supply stores. It works extremely well on all non-porous concrete fountains as well as EPDM fishponds liners. Reflecting pools are another good application for EPDM. These are demanding applications where the unique properties of EPDM have a distinct advantage over other products. The success of PondPro 2000 is through combining ethylene and propylene with a diene monomer. PondPro 2000 is safe for fish and plant life as well as chlorinated water. This polymer (when crosslinked) is an excellent moisture barrier, resistant to oxidation and UV degradation but its most important property is its ability to tolerate both low as well as high temperatures (from minus 62 to plus 350 degrees Fahrenheit).
General EPDM rubber is used exclusively for radiator hoses, freezer gaskets and low temperature seals, steam hoses, and rubber roofing membranes. It is also blended with other rubbers to improve their properties. A multitude of products are now better and last longer because of the contribution made by EPDM rubber.

Modern Cheap Pergola Tips

If you are looking for cheap pergolas, you need to know the following things. Verandas or pergolas are great ideas to extend the space of your living areas to accommodate parties, barbecues and dinner parties. In colder climates, you can purchase plastic bistro blinds to provide shelter for your verandas. Before you go out and purchase verandas, please be aware of the tricks. The savings in costs of purchasing a veranda will be mentioned below.

First of all, companies that make and sell verandas will want to maximise their profits. This means when you go to the sales representatives, they will quote you on an over inflated price. It is up to your skill in negotiation to be able to lower the price. Don't be embarrassed to do this, because this money you save is your hard earned money, so you have the right to ask for a lower price. Having bought a few verandas in the past, I have been able to almost halve the sales-men's quoted prices. Don't you feel annoyed if your friend told you that they had bought a similar veranda for a lower price?

The other issue is to decide whether you will build your own veranda or to hire an expert to install the verandah. Most of the time, the prices quoted by the sales men will include the labour costs. There will be a huge savings if you bought a "Do it yourself" kit or DIY. This is cheaper, but if you have lots of time and have hands on skills, then this could be a great idea.

The other issue to consider is to purchase a gable or flat roof design. Gable designs have a triangular roof, which is more attractive if you built it on the side of your house. Flat roofed verandas are more suitable for the rear of the house; however a gable design will be more attractive. Flat roof verandas on the side of the house are not so attractive, but could be an acceptable option.

Whether wood or steel is better depends on your aesthetics and your needs. The issues with wood verandas are that termites or white ants can attack and eat the wood sections of your veranda.

In summary, the costs savings will be in the labour costs, the company you buy the veranda off (some sell cheaper than others) and how well you negotiate. It is best to get at least 3 quotes and bargain down the best quote.

The What Range of Patio Awnings Are There?

Your patio is a fantastic place to be on a warm, sunny day. But when it gets too hot, the sun can be overbearing and burn your skin. During the winter months, rain and wind can spoil that special event you were planning for your patio or simply means that you can't use it to relax and enjoy the outside.

A patio awning can help protect you from the hard summer sun or cold winter rain. The installation of a patio can mean an extra living space for your home. That is, the extra space a protected patio supplies can expand the feeling of how large your home is. You can even take out comfortable seating and television to enjoy that patio as an outside lounge.

A fixed patio awning is either made from metal like aluminum or canvas. These awnings don't move, but are instead attached to the side of your house and reach out to protect the space. Canvas awnings are the cheapest but can be damaged by high winds and aren't always that durable. Metal awnings on the other hand are durable and strong but don't suit everyone taste or home decor.

Retractable patio awnings can retract or extend whenever you want protection from the rain or sun. The most expensive retractable patio awnings are automatic and with a quick flick of a switch will extend or retract with no effort on your behalf.

With any awning you need to be careful about high winds as they can damage or even tear the awning off the house. Canvas and retractable awnings are more susceptible to this. If you live in an area which has high winds, then you will need to either retract the awning when the wind picks up or take down the canvas. While this is simple with a retractable awning, with a canvas awning this can take some time and effort.

The most important part of a canvas awning is the material that it is made from. You want something that is durable, strong and resistant to UV. Some material is scientifically design to actually reduce how hot the sun is underneath the awning. This type of material is great for people who have children and want them to be able to play on the patio.

You can buy patio awnings from most home improvement stores. Some can be setup by yourself, while others will require you to hire a professional to establish the awning for you.

Why go for those noisy humidifiers in your home, when you can have a water fountain that does the same job. As earlier said, fountains are great stress busters. Water, they say, when it falls from a height releases negative ions, which when combined with the positive electrons in the atmosphere, manages to neutralize the air. The Chinese were the first to realize this and believed that water fountains, released 'chi' or positive energy.

Wall Water fountains are not only popular as a choice to decorate your home, but also used in offices, where they are personalized by adding the company logo on it. There are many offices that use these as a partition to separate spaces. For those looking for a water fountain that suites their taste and style you could go for custom fountains, but typically will see a premium price as they need to be custom made and sized.

Taking care of fountains is easy as well. All that you have to do is ensure that the pump is always submerged in water and when it is not to be used for a prolonged period, you unplug it and empty it as you don't want stagnant water sitting for a perior of time. Also using distilled water instead of tap water ensures that you don't have to clean it as often but keep in mind, you will need to clean your fountain every month or few months if larger to rid it of any algae growth.

Modern Creating A Pond

Most gardens, however small, are improved with the addition of a pond. Including water in your garden will encourage beneficial wildlife, and will create a wonderful backdrop to summer entertaining. At Garden4less, we stock the full range of Hozelock pumps and pond equipment which will ensure your pool stays healthy and crystal clear. Our guide will enable you to build a simple water feature from scratch with the minimum of effort and expense.

Safety and situation
It is important to consider the layout and general feel of your garden when deciding to add water. Geometric shaped ponds look best gardens which have straight-edged landscaping, whereas an irregular shaped pool will suit an informal scheme. If your garden combines both a wilderness and some formal areas, try a circular pool which will suit almost any situation. It is advisable to site your water feature in a sunny part of the garden this ensures that aquatic plants will receive the light they need in order to thrive. Wherever you choose to build, the appearance of the pond will be greatly improved if you attempt to blend it into the environment with clever planting.

It goes without saying that children should always be supervised around water. In fact, it is inadvisable to add a pool to your garden if you have family members younger than four. Instead, try one of our stunning solar water features, such as the slate fountain, which will provide the relaxing sound of water without the danger. The lions head design will look superb when used in a formal garden, or try our sunjet fountain perfect for including in a water feature of your own design.

Getting started
Once you have decided where and what type of pond to build, begin by marking out your chosen area boundaries with a length of hosepipe or a line of sand, so you know where to dig.
1.Dig out your chosen shape to the required depth and check that it is level it is worth taking a time over this, as the pond will look better if the water comes exactly to the top of the liner all the way round.
2.Remove sharp stones (which might pierce the liner) from the bed of the pond before adding a pond underlay which is rot and root resistant. You can use heavy sand, but since it is penetrable by rocks and organic matter, underlay is a better long-term solution.
3.Now lay your liner into the hole, over the underlay. Work round the pond folding and tucking to achieve a neat finish; then add water.
4.When full, cut off excess liner with a sharp knife. Be sure to leave at least fifteen centimetres excess around the edge of the pond this can then be covered with soil and planted or disguised with attractive rocks.
1.To create varied habitats within your pond, create gently sloping shallows. Deep water is fine, but a number of different depths will attract a wider range of creatures.

Planting
A well-planted pond will blend into its environment. Once you have added aquatic and marginal plants, consider which varieties will help the outer area blend into your garden. For an informal pond, sow Lychnis flos-cuculi Ragged Robin. This attractive wild flower thrives in damp, pond-side conditions. Hesperis matronalis is another good choice which can be grown in full sun or part-shade. This wild flower has spikes of purple and lilac flowers which are loved by butterflies. This variety also boasts a delicious sweet and spicy scent which will fill the evening air with perfume. As well as naturalising your pond, surrounding it with wild flowers and tall plants also provides hiding places for frogs, toads and newts all of which will help to control pests in your garden. If you are aiming to create a wildlife haven, it may be best to avoid goldfish since they can dirty the water too much for other creatures. There will, however, be plenty to admire in the animals that automatically flock to your pool. Expect to see water boatmen, aquatic snails, whirligig beetles and dragonflies as well as frogs and toads.

Introducing animal life
Although fish may not be an ideal choice for wildlife, they will add a splash of vibrant orange to your formal, or semi-formal pond. If you have plenty of space, the classic Koi carp are arguably the most stunning species with which to stock your pool. For smaller amounts of water, Shubunkins and Golden Orfe will provide a beautiful display but always check how large your fish will grow to avoid overpopulation.
When keeping fish, good pond maintenance is essential. We stock a huge range of Hozelock filters (link) which will keep your water clear and your fish healthy. A combined pump and filter (link) will provide constant movement to avoid your water becoming stagnant. If your pond develops excessive algae, the Hozelock UV filter (link) represents a sophisticated solution and excellent value for money. Remove excessive amounts of weed by hand, and remember to feed your fish (link to fish food) and you will be enjoying your pond (and its inhabitants!) for years to come.

The choice of materials for your patio is based on personal taste. Many people like the classic look of brick, which is durable, easy to install and available in many colors. Patio pavers are also inexpensive and easy to install. They are available in many shapes and sizes and are long lasting and durable. A third option is flagstone. Available in many shapes and colors, flagstone can be pre-cut for standard sizes or custom shapes.

If you would like to have box gardens or a small patch of grass on your patio, plan to have them in the areas that receive consistent amounts of sunlight.

A fountain or small waterfall will add a luxurious and exotic feel to your patio. Running water helps obscure outside noises and creates a relaxing atmosphere, especially if you are in an urban area.

There is nothing as pleasant as enjoying a meal on your patio. Design an area large enough for a table and a few chairs. If you are very limited on space, built-in planters with wide borders offer a place to sit for buffets and casual gatherings.

Best of Pool Safety - Safeguarding Your Pool

If you are planning to install a pool in your backyard, there are a few things you should consider, first. As you probably realize, having a pool is a hazard, especially for children

Many cities require fences of a certain type or height. These may need to surround your entire property, or be built as pool enclosures. There may also be restrictions on the type of gate you are allowed to install in this fence. For example, it may need to be kept locked all of the time. If you do have a gate, consider a gate alarm that will sound if the gate is opened, to let you know that someone may be entering the pool area. Research the local regulations before installing a pool; in most cases, such fencing must be installed prior to the pool itself. Don't commit to the expense of a pool only to later realize that you needed fences or other features to keep your pool from becoming a hazard.

Once your pool has been installed and the fencing is up, you still need to protect the pool from anyone who might inadvertently wander in. This is especially important if you have children yourself, as they will quickly learn how to gain access to the pool. Covering the pool with a hard cover during the offseason is one way to keep young children from falling into the pool. This also protects the surface from falling leaves, bugs, and other debris.

Another way to protect your pool is through the use of a pool alarm. Such devices attach to the side of a pool, and will sound an alarm if anyone should enter the pool before disabling such an alarm. This can instantly alert you to any children or others who have found their way into the pool, and give you enough time to get them out without serious harm. These pool alarms are helpful for families with young children or those in neighborhoods with young children who may not know better than to jump into a neighbor's unattended pool.

For your family and invited guests, be sure to keep flotation devices on hand. These can come in quite handy if you have weak swimmers who want to use your pool. This way, they can stay safe and still have fun. If the depths and size of your pool warrant it, you may also want to keep additional lifeguarding floats on hand in case of an emergency. Even strong swimmers can form cramps after spending some time in a pool.

If you do have children, or a neighbor has small children, be sure to instruct them on proper use of the pool as it is being installed. For example, require them to ask permission before just jumping into the water.

When you are installing a pool, whether above ground or in-ground, you'll want to make sure to consider the safety aspects. Make your pool less accessible for those from your neighborhood, especially children, and have measures in place to make sure that people can not use your pool without your knowledge.

Inspirational Outdoor Basketball Hoops: Hoop It Up Outdoors!

If you look into it, basketball is really an outdoor sport. Dribbling around a cement pavement while shooting with the wind in your face; that is the ultimate exhilaration! And its only proper that people begin to notice the value of outdoor basketball hoops.

Say all you want about basketball being a sport that was meant more for indoor areas than the outdoors. But you have to take note of how convenient it is to go for outdoor basketball, be it value-wise or money-wise.

Outdoor basketball hoops can make a lot of difference in terms of the budget that you have. If you're the type who just wants to play casual games in the comforts of your backyard, getting a regular gym-style basketball hoop might not be a good idea.

Outdoor hoops are much better in this case since they will be a lot more durable. The entirety of the hoop has been custom-made with a thick anti-rust coating. Add to that the special type of nets that can come with the purchase since they use metal chain nets rather than the typical nylon ones used for gym hoops. Another advantage is the backboard.

Typical indoor hoops have acrylic backboards that would normally break and turn yellow due to the elements. An outdoor basketball hoop usually comes with a fiberglass backboard and is proven sturdier than acrylic ones.

Of course, you have to take into consideration what kind of climate and weather changes you might experience before buying an outdoor hoop. If it rains a lot in your place, a basketball hoop like this might not be such a good idea since you won't be able to use them in the first place.

Clearly, basketball is a sport that can be played at different levels and different places. But you have to admit that nothing can match the thrill of playing outdoors. In this case, let outdoor hoops help you out.

Lovely The Truth About Composite Decking & Ipe Wood - Fact Vs Fiction

There is a ton of misinformation about ipe wood. For the most part, many people would have you believe that purchasing ipe hardwood is a sin against the earth. To be frank, this is just not the case. Likewise, many people would also have you believe that composite decking is an eco-friendly product that makes a great alternative to other exotic hardwoods. Again, this is not the case. Here's why.

Composite decking is made from plastic and recycled wood fibers. Many people think that because the plastic is recycled they are buying an eco-friendly product. Is this true? Let's dig a little deeper. Where does the plastic come from? The plastic from most of the most popular and cheap brands of composite decking come from petroleum based plastic products like PVC.

This petroleum comes from oil. Think about that for a second. Is oil eco-friendly? Are the countries that sell us oil...are they eco-friendly? Heck, are they even friendly?! What about transporting the oil? Did you ever hear of the Exxon-Valdez oil spill? How about the process to drill for oil? Is that eco-friendly? Clearly, the answers to these questions are usually "no." So, is composite decking eco-friendly? I think it's safe to conclude that it isn't.

Unfortunately, there is more to consider. Let's say you're still not convinced and think that composite decking is eco-friendly. Have you considered the maintenance issues and the need for constant treatments? Simply put, because composite decking materials are made from wood fibers and plastic, they also tend to absorb water easily. Because composite decking is so porous, mold, mildew, fungus, rot and decay, not to mention, insect infestation are highly probable. Now, ask yourself this question.

With all these composite decking problems, how do you treat and prevent composite decking from breaking down? The answer? You have to constantly clean and then DRY your deck. That's right, if you check out some composite decking manufactures, they will actually advise that you dry your deck after you clean it. Even then, they can't guarantee that there won't be mildew. The most that they can do is tell you how to inhibit its growth and even then you have to be extraordinarily diligent in making sure that your deck remains very dry.

It's not surprising to find these same companies tell you that even if your deck doesn't look like it has mildew you should still clean composite decking because the fungus and mildew take some time to actually manifest itself. Now, ask yourself, how much time do you have to dry your deck each and every time it rains? If you have a family and are extremely busy with work, wouldn't you rather spend time on your deck and not have to worry about mold, mildew, fungus and constant composite decking maintenance?

Yes, there's more to consider. Taking all of these factors into consideration, what's the likelihood that you'll have to replace your composite deck? The odds are pretty high, right? How environmentally responsible are you if you have to buy MORE plastic decking? I think you already know the answer to that.

Ok, so now that it's clear that composite decking is NOT eco-friendly. Let's take a look at one alternative: Ipe. People who are environmentally responsible and also responsible consumers do their research. Here are the facts and the truth about ipe. Ipe is more eco-friendly than composite decking. I know you need proof, so here it is.

Unlike oil, ipe is a renewable resource. Thanks to increased awareness of irresponsible logging, more and more lumber companies are choosing to use environmentally responsible and sustainable forestry practices. Think about it. Can you GROW more oil? No. But, you can certainly make sure that whatever trees are cut down are replaced with new trees. In addition, you also can consider the fact that, because the demand for eco-friendly wood is growing, more and more lumber companies are now both adapting and adopting these sustainable forestry practices and are even joining groups like the United States Green Building Council and the Forest Stewardship Council.

Simply put, the more awareness that is put out there about irresponsible logging, the companies are forced to move away from those practices. That is better for the environment. Unfortunately, oil companies won't and can't just start creating oil on their own, so they will continue to use up all the earth's oil.

Ok, now what about chemicals? Ipe decking needs very little treatment over its lifetime. In fact, most people treat it with ipe oil for first and second year. Then, depending on the overall yearly climate, they could treat ipe every other year. Composite decking needs a lot more than that, for sure! Here's the fact, ipe decking is so dense and has its own natural oils that it is extremely resistant to mold, mildew, fungus, rot and decay.

Oh, and those pesky insects? They'd rather go down the block and eat a composite deck. Again, because ipe is so dense, insects actually avoid attacking it. If you do some research you will find that the United States Naval Laboratory actually tested the resilience of ipe wood and found that a single piece of ipe could be left untreated for decades before it would start to show signs of decay and infestation. That's quite a testament to ipe hardwood's durability. Is it any wonder why this Brazilian walnut is also called ironwood?

Let's dig deeper now. If ipe decking needs less treatments and will naturally last longer than composite decking, which product is more eco-friendly? One more thing to consider; if composite decking breaks down, how do you think most people dispose of it? That's right; they send it to a landfill where plastic takes decades to decompose. However, ipe decking is 100% biodegradable.

Clearly, ipe is a better green-living product to buy. And, guess what? Because of the volatile price of oil, ipe hardwood is now cheaper than most composite decking materials! Companies that sell composite plastics justify their high prices because they have an eco-friendly product sticker on it. Given all that you've learned in this article, it's easy to conclude that they are gouging the consumer just because they put an eco-friendly label on an inferior and non-eco-friendly product.

Now that you know the difference between ipe wood and composite deck materials, you can shop with confidence and build the deck of your dreams!

Amazing The Beauty of a Retractable Patio Awning

When it comes to shading your patio, you need to get the right facts before proceeding to getting whatever type of cover you may need. There are various styles from the classic patio cover, which is a more fixed and constructed patio structure, to a more dynamic type of patio awning or canopy style of covering. The latter of these categories is where we will find the topic of our discussion regarding retractable patio awnings.

The retractable awning has several benefits over a fixed system and some drawbacks as well. We will discuss a few of those and the costs as well in this article. But, before we get to that, you should decide upon what type of shade you are looking to get from your particular type. Are you looking to provide year round shade or something just for periodic occasions and events? If you use your patio or deck mostly for entertaining, then you have other options as well.

Let's first assume that you are looking to use your patio or deck as a year round endeavor. With this in mind, a more permanent solution may fit your needs best. Something along the lines of a pergola or some type of wood or other metal patio cover may be in your best interests. This is because you will not need to fuss with any moving parts or have to worry about fabrics that may be subjected to the elements and fade, tear or wear out and need replacing. Now, this isn't to say that your post and beam pergola or other patio structure will last forever, but it can sure last for years to decades if well maintained.

Just because you are looking for year round enjoyment from your patio should not rule out a retractable patio awning because you can get these styles with weather resistant fabrics as well. Brands like Sunbrella and Sunsetter are big names in this department. You can find more by searching for them online. Not only will you find ultraviolet resistant fabrics, but you will find some amazing types of motorized patio awnings as well. These are just like the manual, hand crank styles, but require nothing more than the touch of a button to activate the retractable feature.

If you are concerned about costs, you should know that a retractable awning will cost somewhere in the range of $ 1,200-1,500 USD. This is for the basic style of awning. For a more custom size or if you are looking to get a motorized retractable awning, you will likely be looking at a cost of around $ 2,000 USD or more. Depending upon the type of shade you are looking for, a simple canopy type of patio awning will suffice. But, as discussed, for more flexibility and ease of operation a retractable, even motorized, awning is the way to go.

Adorable How To Build A Safe And Strong Deck?

Decks can be a beautiful extension of a home and in many ways have become necessity in resell value. It is a great place to spend your time, entertain guests or just relax with friends and family. Although, the usual life span of an average exterior wood deck is about 15 years, older decks can fall without any warning and that is why it is necessary to make several code specific connection points to build a safe and strong deck. Some of the ways by which a safe and strong deck can be build are:

Continuous Load Path:

Today, the modern constructors use a continuous load path to transfer the weight through a series of various positive connections all over the structure of the deck. Loads are relocated from the top down of footings to the point of connection till the structure of the home. The use of continuous load paths helps resist lateral movement, uplift and the weight of deck users. Decks need secure connections to have a good continuous load path.

Critical Connections:

Ledger Attachment: This is one connection where the ledger is connected with the house. Make sure to use lag screws or through- bolts instead of nails in critical areas for a proper deck building.

Joints: Joining stairs properly is must because stairs are among the most critical connections of the deck. Make sure to tie each stair step or tread to the stair stringers and use post bases to connect the posts of the concrete or footing slab underneath your deck.

Combat Corrosion

If you live in the area that is prone to moisture from precipitation or humidity, the risk of corrosion is higher and it is very important to make sure that you use the connectors that are made from steel with appropriate finish. While selecting the connectors, make sure to consider how the weather and the environment can affect your deck.

Hire a professional Deck Builder

No matter how good you are, you can never build a deck as good as a professional deck builder. Hiring a professional for deck builder is the preferred option to consider because an expert will provide you a safe, secure and strong deck that will stand for many years to come.

Modern Benefits of Owning a Cedar Deck Box

You'll often find the cedar deck box as you browse websites or catalogs that deal in outdoor furniture and accessories. Certainly, deck boxes provide helpful outdoor storage solutions. People may use them to store gardening tools or pool toys or even convert them to ice chests for parties. However, owning a cedar deck box brings a number of benefits to people searching for indoor storage, too.

The variety of dimensions allows you to select the cedar deck box that best fits your space or holds your things. Some storage solutions come in one size, and one size only. Enjoy a selection of sizes and perhaps even find a handsome coordinating pair in two different sizes.

You can also use a cedar deck box in a number of ways. The absence of prefitted shelves or compartments allows you to customize the space in whatever way works best for you. Consider some of the many things that pose storage problems in modern homes. Many of these could store well in deck boxes: media, such as books, DVDs, or CDs; bedding, such as extra blankets, sheets, or pillows; overflow apparel, such as off-season clothing, hunting gear, or sports uniforms; craft materials, such as quilting fabric, yarn, or scrapbooking supplies; or children's items, such as games, toys, or stuffed animals.

When your home offers little closet space, free-standing storage is usually necessary. A cedar deck box provides that storage and looks attractive. In fact, deck boxes usually look much more appealing than the plastic bins you usually find as standard fare in the organizing aisle of your local discount store.

Of course, plastic containers can be handy tools for organizing a jumble of smaller items. But sometimes you must place these on the high shelves because others need access to lower shelves. You can use a cedar deck box to hide containers that don't look so pretty sitting out on their own. No one else has to look at the stuff, but you get to keep the containers within easy reach.

If you plan to sore fabric items, you might be interested to know that cedar wood offers some distinct benefits in this case. The wood contains natural oils that act as both a preservative and an insect repellant. These aren't the kind of oils that will stain your clothes. But they will reduce the risk of insect damage. Additionally, cedar emits an odor that will keep your items from smelling musty when you bring them out of storage.

Finally, you can usually use a cedar deck box for additional seating. Storage benches may come with attached cushions. But deck boxes often look the same and offer the same capacity, except without the cushion. A quality cedar deck box, even without a cushion, should be strong enough to work as seating. If you want, you can top it with your own cushion or throw pillows.

Whatever your tastes, a deck box can provide many benefits as both outdoor and indoor storage-with the bonus of extra seating.

Beautiful Choose Beauty and Durability in Wood Porch Decking

When it comes to the options available for material to construct wood porch decking, there are a variety of good looking wood choices depending upon your design preference.

Redwood is among the best known and most popular woods available, with a natural beauty and a resistance to decay and insect infestation. If you purchase grades that include sapwood, however, termites can be problematic. Clear Heart Redwood with no knots is the most expensive grade available but has the least amount of drawbacks.

Those who prefer a handsome looking blond deck can consider Cypress wood with smaller knots than most grades of redwood. It accepts colored stains easily, but like redwood, tends to be at the premium price range. Imo cypress is ranked the most resistant to decay.

Western red cedar is an easy lightweight wood to work with, colorful and good looking, but can rot, decay or become insect infested in as little as seven or eight years. If your deck does not ventilate or is subject to the accumulation of leaves drifting in from nearby trees, take a pass on using cedar. Cedar does not hold up well for low to the ground deck projects as ground moisture causes quick deterioration.

Take a pass on using treated yellow pine wood, which is not stable enough to create durable wood porch decking and has a habit of cracking and splintering. Douglas fir is usable for creating wood porch decking, but sap leaking from the boards create problems.

For a hardwood that combines beauty and durability with none of the drawbacks associated with domestic woods, imported Ipe deck wood, also called Brazilian walnut, is an excellent value for decking projects.

Ipe is prized for its extreme hardness, actually five times harder than treated yellow pine. Grown in South America, Ipe is impervious to decay, rot and termite infestation, and is slip resistant even when wet.

Ipe deck wood is fire resistant, an important safety feature especially in fire-prone states, and when left untreated, will last four decades or more. If maintained with deck oil, wood porch decking using Ipe has been known to stand up to the elements for 100 years. Its rich brown color accented with golden hues makes a deck that offers elegant beauty without the hassle of high maintenance.

The Koi Pond Pumps - Choosing This Critical Component

There is no doubt that the work horse of the Koi pond is the pump. Whether you have opted for a pump-fed or gravity-fed system, selecting the right pump is a critical step. The submersible pump is a common choice - widely available, relatively inexpensive and very easy to install. They are placed either in the pond for a pump-fed system or in the last chamber of the filtration system in the case of the gravity-fed system.

The submersible pump for all its simplicity does have a number of disadvantages. The biggest problem lies in the cleaning and maintenance. Since the pump is either in the pond or the filtration system, cleaning requires removing the unit. This can be especially time consuming when the pump is in the pond. The submersible pump in the pond can also become an obstacle on which your Koi could injure themselves. In the filtration system the pump takes up valuable space that could be used for filtration media.

The option I like best for a gravity-fed pond is the external pump. The pump is placed after the filtration system and so pumps clean water back into the pond. This cuts down on the amount of cleaning required and being out of the water makes maintenance an easier chore. The biggest drawback is that they need to be kept undercover in a dry space protected from the elements.

When choosing your pump, make sure you get one large enough to maintain the desired flow rate and water pressure. Ideally you want to be able to turn the whole pond volume over at least every two hours. Also think about the power consumption. Today there new lower wattage pumps coming on the market. These, while more expensive to buy, will save in overall operating costs. Just keep in mind these lower wattage pumps may not give you the power you need.

As always, do your homework before you make your choice. A little due diligence up front will save you time and headaches later on.

Amazing Old World Kitchen Design

Many homeowners build new homes, but then realize that there can be a starkness to some of the modern home styles currently in vogue.  In order to bring some age and patina into the home, an old world kitchen design may be in order.  Going back to a time before computers and digital electronics swept the country, and giving a nod to European traditions and design sensibilities is at the heart of achieving a lovely old world kitchen design aesthetic in your own home.

You can start to think about an old world kitchen look by visiting a home decor store, or even an antique store.  You want to focus on items that have a vintage and timeworn look to them.  This can translate into the types of flooring, counter and cabinet surfaces as well as the paint techniques and wallpapers that you might select.  Items that have an heirloom feel to them are always appropriate in an old world kitchen.

Another idea is to give your kitchen an European feel through the use of color and textiles.  French country style is still very hot right now, and it focuses on the bright colors found in nature in the south of sunny France.  Think of bright reds, blues and yellows harmonizing in kitchen curtains, towels, table cloths, napkins, lamp covers, as well as surfaces that can be painted in those rich colors so beloved in France.  Dishes, serving bowls and other food preparation items can be purchased with a European aesthetic in mind.  Fiestaware plates, bowls and cups in bright colors can be perfect in this type of old world setting as well.

The types of fabrics and finishes you select also will play a part in how the room comes across to you.  Vintage furnishings can give a cozy and comfortable look to a room, while more traditional desks, cabinetry finishes and hardware, as well as tile flooring can give a prestigious country style that is elegant.  Garden influences can work wonders to create an old world setting, since potagers, or kitchen gardens, were and remain common in Europe.  Fruit and vegetable motifs might decorate backsplash tiles and fabrics used in the kitchen, for example.  If you have several collections, you can layer them to give the room the appearance of fullness.  A bowl used in the kitchen might be reinvented to hold a grouping of candles, for example, or an outdoor garden bench might be brought into the kitchen seating area for added appeal.

By working closely with a kitchen designer, you can plan now so that your kitchen will have that old world design that you want, and you will not overlook any crucial areas needed to bring this design idea to fruition.

Modern Essential Fireplace Accessories For Your Home

Fireplaces are a great addition to any home, but there are a lot of accessories and tools that go along with it. You almost cannot use a fireplace out of the box. I suppose you might be able to one fire started, but without the proper fireplaces accessories, the fireplace will soon get dirty, not give off as much heat, and could pose safety concerns for you and your family. If you have the proper fireplace tools then there is no reason the fireplace cannot last for a very long time.

One essential fireplace accessory is the fireplace tools set. This is a set of tools that are usually hung on a holder of some kind right next to the firebox. The set usually include a shovel and brush to help you clean out old ashes and tongs and a poker that will help you move hot logs when you need to encourage the fire to burn evenly. The fireplace accessory tool set is functional, but it can also be a decorative element. Just having one of these fireplace accessory sets next to your fireplace makes it seem more authentic and makes it look like you use the fireplace often even if you do not. Some people even buy ornate antique fireplace accessories that are never actually used and are just for show.

If you want to ensure that your fireplace is efficient in giving off heat then you should invest in a fireback. This is an iron or steel plate that fits into the back of the firebox that will reflect hear back into the room rather than let it get absorbed into the brick in the back or escape up the flue. Firebacks have been proven to increase the amount of heat given back to a room from a burning fireplace.

If you are interested in fireplace accessories for safety then you should look into a fireplace screen. Screens can also be decorative, but they are good for keeping you and any guests safe. It reminds adults to keep a safe distance so they do not get hit by any sparks that pop out of a burning fire. They are almost essential for children because they would protect a child who was falling from falling directly into a fire. Another safety element is a cover for on top of you flue on the roof. These covers or caps keep small animals, rain, and debris from making their way down your chimney. They also can correct problems with a poorly designed flue.

A broom and a scoop will help you to keep your fireplace clean and you want to make sure that you clean your fireplace after every use.  Your ash should be cool so that you do not start a fire in the container you use to store this ash.  You may want to chooses a fireproof receptacle and transfer them when you are sure that they are cool.

A screen is something else that you will want to make sure that you consider.  A screen is a great safety measure that has many purposes.  A screen is a great tool that you should always use if you have children and pets.  This will keep them at a safe distance from the fire in case they forget. Lovely Give Hydroponic Gardening a Try!

Hydroponics is a derivation of the Greek words hydro meaning water and pono meaning labor. It is a manner of growing vegetation without the use of soil through some type of hydroponic system. Hydroponics was chiefly used in countries where the soil was not suitable for growing vegetation and for industrial purposes.

However hydroponic gardening is becoming increasingly more popular amongst all walks in society. The first signs of this growing method showed up in the bigger cities where people had limited access to land to grow fresh vegetables for their health. It has now spread from the cities to the countryside and all lifestyles. The benefits of hydroponics such as soilless cultivation and the higher crop yields in a smaller area have made it possible for many to grow a garden in a smaller area that provides enough produce to even put up for winter use as well as have fresh produce year long.

When growing your own soilless garden you have control over the environment as well as the forms of fertilizers used. With hydroponic gardening, regardless of your soil quality or lack thereof, anyone is able to grow their own produce and faster then they could in even great soil. There are no risks of diseases such as the recurring problem with salmonella in tomatoes. As well as you will always have consistent crops and the highest quality of vegetables. You can even grow fruit trees as well as plants that are out of season. There are many greenhouses worldwide that utilize hydroponics to grow flowers and vegetables year round.

Plans are underway for vertical hydroponic gardens in several urban areas. Whereas some towns have garden plots for the community, urban areas will have hydroponic plots for people to grow their own fresh produce. It is even being considered for use on ships as an alternative to having to find fresh produce that may be out of season while out at sea.

You can set up a hydroponic garden either indoors in an area with ample light, outdoors, or in a greenhouse. It is also environmentally friendly. It uses only 10 percent of the water used by traditional gardening methods, eliminates the need for herbicides and pesticides, and only uses about one quarter of the fertilizer that traditional gardeners need to obtain the same yield. Hydroponics can produce the same yield as traditional gardens in about one fifth the space and is not dependent on growing seasons. This means that instead of only bearing once, they can bear vegetables or fruit several times a year.

Hydroponics may just change the way the world views farmers in the future and could be the answer to food shortages and hunger worldwide.

Beautiful Patio Furniture Product Design

There are a number of different choices for someone shopping for new outdoor furniture, and by looking more closely at patio furniture product design, you are more likely and able to make an informed decision and get something you will be happy with not only now, but for years to come!

The tried and true name in product design for all your outdoor needs is aluminum, so naturally it will be the first choice examined. The specific type of aluminum in question is referred to as "sling" because of the process used to treat it to make it the best. Sling does outstanding in all categories, which here include but are not limited to durability in tough weather situations, longevity with outdoor use, and manageability for the owner. You may love the look of cast iron for instance, but you may think differently when you pick it up and try to move it across the patio. And the all important factor of price is actually very reasonable, making sling aluminum the best recommendation for someone looking for a few outdoor chairs to jazz up the space.

Cast aluminum is the next option, and appears more formal than most other options because of its deep black, rustic look that many find attractive. The main drawback of this beautiful material is that it is heavier and a bit more costly. In terms of durability it is nearly unmatched. No weather condition can place even a mark on cast iron, and the cleaning is as easy as taking out a leaf-blower and "dusting" it off. The color also lends itself to cushioning, adding a great deal of design freedom in color and pattern, and also of course, comfort.

Wrought Iron, perhaps the most classic material of them all has a special place in many people's hearts because it is what they grew up eating at with their grandparents and elders. Wrought iron is a very heavy material, granted, but it has a great deal to offer for this one drawback. Wrought iron furniture can withstand anything and more that any other patio furniture could withstand, and the classic beauty of it shines. It is truly something that can be passed down the family through generations, and still look as magnificent as the day it was purchased.

There really are countless options to choose from, and to look into only one would be severely selling yourself short of the perfect furniture for your home and outdoor space.

This may not be the exact area you had in mind when you envisioned your garden, but this choice will greatly influence the outcome of whatever you plant in it. As you begin to prepare the soil, remember to check any labels of products you may use to ensure that they are in fact organic and do not contain any type of chemicals.

Now that you have planted your seeds and your plants have begun to grow, the next problem that you will face in organic gardening is just right around the corner in the form of the many different insects that prey upon the plants in your garden. Nice Significant Types Of Patio Umbrella Lights

If you need more light around your patio table and your outdoor lights, then try using patio umbrella lights. These systems illuminate the areas, moreover, all of them are energy efficient. In this article, we will figure out the significant types of patio umbrella lights.

The obvious benefit to using patio umbrella lights is the convenience of immediate light. But there are other advantages. You could try using candles but that leads to a big mess with candle wax dripping and the wick smoking, not to mention the possibility of accidental fire. Patio umbrella lighting uses LED technology so they burn longer and more efficiently. They also won't attract flying insects.

The lights that hang from the vanes of the patio umbrella shine directly onto the table. The only downside that they pose is the need for an extension cord. This can pose several issues, one being something to trip over. The upside is that the effect of the lighting transforms the atmosphere and makes it seem like natural lighting. These work exceptionally well with larger patio umbrellas.

The LED ring that fits around the support pole has its own advantages and disadvantages. This works better with smaller octagonal umbrellas. They are more energy efficient as they use LED bulbs which means you won't have to replace them as often and they are directional so you can focus them exactly where you want. The only downside is that they require batteries to operate them. This means you need to keep spare batteries close by in the event that the others die.

Another option is to go solar. Solar umbrella lights utilize a solar panel on the top of the umbrella. This requires no additional power but the sun. It may cost a bit more initially but it's a one off fee and basically pays for itself in a relatively short time. It doesn't matter which style of patio umbrella lights you choose though; they all serve their own purpose. It just depends on the size of the table.

The Deck and Patio - Container Gardening

Whether you have a massive deck or patio, or a small space for outdoor entertaining, you can create a stunning outdoor garden. With container gardening, any patio or deck can be transformed into a beautiful oasis for entertaining or simply relaxing. The use of pots, planters, and an array of containers make a huge difference in a small space. And containers are much easier to manage and replace than traditional gardens.

First, it's important to choose containers that fit in well with your environment and that provide a healthy home for plants. It's best to invest a little more money in quality containers rather than purchasing plastic or terracotta. Good quality containers will last for many years to come and they'll come to life many times again as you add new plants. They give your outdoor space a feeling of warmth and add depth to the area.

Containers with wide openings to display plants are a good choice. They display well and are easy to manage when watering, pruning, and caring for your plants. Sunlight can cause damage to plastic quickly and discoloration and fading makes them less appealing. Terracotta pots are more difficult to manage in sunlight because they dry out easily and plants can become dry.

Great choices for patios or decks are glazed ceramic pots in different colors. Glazed ceramic pots are not only good for water retention and planting, but they come in a variety of colors, sizes, and shapes. Just make sure they have drainage holes to avoid water becoming trapped in the soil and plants becoming over-watered and drowning.

If you opt for wooden containers to enhance your deck or patio, try redwood which is resistant to rot and they age well with weathering. Choosing wooden containers in a variety of shapes such as square, oblong, and round, adds a lot more variety to your home improvement project. Keep in mind that the larger the pot, the less likely it is to dry out and leave plants dry and brittle.

For container gardening to add to the value of your home and contribute to overall home improvement, it's important to keep plants watered. If your deck or patio gets lots of sunlight, you'll need to water more often. If the weather is humid, plants will need even more water. You can position them around the edge of your patio or deck so a sprinkler system contributes to the water they receive.

When considering a container garden to improve the exterior of your home, think about including pansies, petunias, geraniums, impatiens, periwinkle, or snapdragons. You can also consider alyssum, marigolds, and zinnias for more color. Seasonal ferns and other green plants add depth and beauty to your garden as well. But don't assume that flowering plants are your only choice. Consider plants such as cherry tomatoes, blueberry bushes, and tiered strawberry plants depending on your geographic region.

Improving your deck or patio can be simple and inexpensive. Container gardening is one way to instantly create a beautiful and welcoming outdoor space without a lot of time or money. You're just a step away from having an outdoor space you can enjoy for many years to come.

Awesome Organic Gardening - How to Get Started

Organic gardening, and organic farming, can be not only a healthy alternative to chemically grown vegetables, but also a very profitable and fun hobby. Chemical compounds for improving fertility and fighting plagues are increasingly expensive, and they just don't deliver what they promise. For centuries, gardeners and farmers have used a series of natural methods to increase productivity and fight pests before the use of pesticides, and there is no reason why you can't do the same today!

You may be asking yourself, where you should get started. The first step is to get information. You'll need to first know the basics if you want to start your very own organic garden.

The first basic requirement (and these will be expanded upon in follow up emails!) is the soil you use to grow your vegetables. Knowing how to compost and properly fertilize your soil is extremely important, if you were to build a house, would you not want strong foundations to build upon? It is exactly the same for Organic Gardening, without the proper soil for your vegetables to grow in, you will not see the results. To be a successful gardener you will need to learn to balance hard and soft biological waste, balance manure with vegetable waste, and aerate it properly and to apply it to your soil. This is absolutely essential to have a healthy soil.

Next, you will need to decide what plants to grow. You'll need to learn when and how often to rotate your plants. Some plants take minerals from the soil that other plants don't need, whilst others will be able to assist your soil by giving back minerals, getting the right soil to plant can be a very delicate balance.

Choosing the vegetable, the time of rotation and when to let your soil rest is essential, not only for keeping healthy crops but also to maximise production. Choosing the right vegetables to grow depends heavily on your soil type, climate and also the water available. Some plants may also require more attention than others.

As organic gardening suggests the use of NO pesticides what so ever, it is important to know how to properly protect your plants from pests that may be lurking in your backyard. For every pest you find, there is a natural way of treating them, without the use of toxins, poisons and pesticides. There is no need to spread poison around your garden, since nature already has pest control mechanisms.

Organic Gardening does need some planning. You need to compensate for deficiencies of your soil or of the biodiversity of your region. You'll have to do your own compost and wait until it is ready. But with a little time and patience, you will soon learn that Organic Gardening can be a very enjoyable (and profitable!) hobby.

New Add A Deck For The Next Home Remodeling Project

For people that love spending time in the great outdoors without having to go far from home, a deck is one possible solution. Adding a deck or patio to the home can transform the back yard from something gazed at through a window into a special part of the house to be enjoyed firsthand. For those not handy with tools and materials, however, it can be a daunting project. Hiring a reliable Northern Virginia home additions contractor to build one is an economical and popular way a homeowner can add a deck without concern for safety of the finished product. It is also one way to make sure the project is completed in a reasonable amount of time. These are just a few ways a deck can change a back yard.

Entertaining
Many homeowners prefer not to entertain because they do not have enough space in their homes to have a lot of people fit comfortably in it for any length of time. Guests are often required to choose an indoor room and park themselves in a corner during a party due to lack of space. Decks can solve that problem. They also offer a clean and comfortable alternative to having people sitting in lawn chairs on the grass. While entertaining on the lawn sounds nice in theory, the reality often includes itchy grass with a host of insects, a lack of a focal point for gatherings and an uneven surface for setting up chairs and tables. A deck offers a convenient gathering place with enhancements like a fire pit, grill, special lighting and a nice place to sit and chat with friends, family or neighbors.

Grilling
The barbecue is often considered a slice of Americana. It is a place for gathering and enjoying good food, drink and friendship. Many self-proclaimed barbecue experts enjoy using their state-of-the-art grill, but do not have a proper place to fire it up. A deck provides a sturdy level surface with plenty of ventilation, a large workspace. As a popular Northern Virginia custom remodeling project, a patio or deck might include electricity and a nearby area to roost while waiting for the meal to cook. This is a prime time for the homeowner to enjoy the back yard from the outdoors rather than from the indoors, peering through the window.

Pool
One of the advantages to having a pool in the back yard is that the people who live there have a special place to cool off and have fun. Building a deck next to or around the pool makes it easier to maintain. It also creates a more comfortable area for those lounging near it and walking through the area to reach it. Itchy grass and sharp stones can be deterrents to using the pool. A deck also protects the grass and other landscaping from withering under splashes of chemically treated water. For those with bald spots in the back yard due to too much shade, a deck can easily hide these places.

New Finding the Right Deck Flooring Material

Choosing the right deck floor may seem to be a difficult decision, but by following a few pointers the decision can be made very easy indeed. Essentially there are only two types of deck floor, and these are either wood or vinyl, and by looking at the pros and cons of these two materials you will be able to make your decision without much problem.

If you use wood for your deck floor you will have a very natural look, and this can be great if it fits in with a traditional decoration in the rest of your house, or if you like to use traditional patio furniture. The negatives to using wood is that you need to make sure the wood is properly treated so that it can cope with all the various weather conditions. The last thing you want is to have to replace your floor after a few years due to weather damage. However, many modern wood flooring types are now treated in a way which makes them fairly weatherproof and so this should not be a problem.

The great thing about vinyl flooring is that there is a huge range of patterns and styles available. If you want to have a Mediterranean feel, for instance, it is fairly easy to find a spiral pattern which will give you the exact design you're looking for. You can also have vinyl tiles which mimic a wood floor and therefore in some ways you can have the best of both worlds.

But no matter which material you choose for your deck flooring, something that you need to bear in mind is the safety aspect. Ensure that you get a flooring material that is anti-slip, especially when wet. Do this and you can rest assured you will be able to enjoy your patio deck in all weather conditions.

Take time to look at the various styles of the flooring in both wood and vinyl and you are sure to find a style to suit your needs.
