Best Deck and Patio Trends

Your deck or patio should reflect your tastes and personality just like the décor inside your house. In the design process, you should plan to use the same materials and design elements as the house's exterior to create a unified effect. Personalize your deck or patio design with interesting railings, posts, and lighting fixtures, which today can be solar or LED.

In the past, when you installed a patio or deck, you had few choices of materials or design, but there has been an explosion of innovative materials lately. Many of them are low maintenance and durable.

Pressure Treated Wood is still inexpensive and widely available. Some wood in the past contained arsenic, but that has been discontinued by the EPA. Wood decks can last up to 30 years, but they need to be power washed and sealed annually.

Wood Composite is made from plastic resin mixed with sawdust. It comes in wood-like planks in various colors. You can cut it like wood, but it won't rot, shrink, warp, or splinter. Wood composite decks can last the lifetime of the deck. It can be cleaned with a power washer, but doesn't need sealing.

Plastic – Today's plastic lumber can look and feel just like real wood, but it won't absorb water or mold, twist, or splinter. It can be cut with woodworking tools and only needs periodic cleaning with water. It does need to be supported by real wood supports. A plastic deck should last 50 years. Eco-friendly versions can be made of 90% recycled plastics and are 100% recyclable.

Concrete – You don't have to have a great off-white slab of concrete like yesteryear. Today, concrete can come in a wide variety of colors and textures. Some can even save you the cost of stone pavers while mimicking its look.

Interlocking Pavers are popular in patios. Pavers can come in a variety of colors or shapes and can look like stone. They are easy to install, inexpensive, and unlikely to mildew.

Modern How to Choose the Right Gardening Tools

No matter what size your garden is, there's no doubt that gardening tools can help make the job of maintaining your garden a lot easier. However there are so many tools available that it can be difficult to know which ones you really need, particularly if you're new to gardening. It's tempting to avoid the confusion by just buying everything, but that just means you'll end up with no money and a storage area full of tools you don't use.

So which tools are worth buying? Gardening involves moving dirt around, so a digging tool is always a good choice. If you're mainly working in pots or containers, then a sturdy trowel is a fabulous investment. A shovel is better if you're going to be moving large amounts of soil around, or to assist you with planting trees, vegetables and flowers. It might be tempting to save yourself some effort by choosing a power tiller or plough, but unless you have a very large garden, they're probably involve more expense and trouble than they're worth.

Another worthwhile tool to buy is a rake or hoe. Again, if you're going to mainly be working in smaller areas, a pot-sized equivalent is a good idea. These tools can be used to smooth soil and remove weeds. This sort of work can be done by hand, but it's easier with the right tool, particularly in a large garden.

Although they're not technically a tool, good gardening gloves are also useful. It may be worth having a couple of pairs - some heavy duty ones for rough work, some thinner ones when you need to feel what you're doing.

Once your garden is established, then at least one pruning tool is a necessity. Depending on the size of your plants, choose anything from pruners or secateurs through to large tree loppers. It's worth spending a little extra to buy a solid, reliable pruning tool, otherwise it may be ruined the first time you try to cut anything with them.

A few more tools that you can probably survive without, but will make life easier depending on the size of your garden, include:

- Wheelbarrow
- Garden fork
- Watering can
- Hose & hose reel
- Rake

Again, it's easy to find cheap tools, but if you're serious about using your tools for a long period of time, think of buying good quality tools as an investment. Cheap tools don't usually work as well, and tend to be less sturdy and easier to break. Happy gardening!

Adorable Space Saving Kitchen

Obviously, if you have a good sized kitchen with plenty of cupboard space then you are one of the lucky ones. Many of us, however, live in tiny properties with kitchens that really are too small to work comfortably in and which feature far too few storage places for your kitchen appliances. This would be less of a problem is people spent a little time completely reorganizing their kitchen so that it worked more efficiently and more effectively. Unfortunately, in this fast-paced life most of us live, there is far too little time to properly organize this household hub into the truly space saving kitchen that it should be. If you can set aside a day in which you truly think about the layout of your kitchen, how many cupboards you have and the jobs you do in your kitchen, then you are going to come up with a far better plan on where to keep each of your appliances so that, when you want to use them, they can be quickly and easily located.

The ideal space saving kitchen has sufficient counter space and storage area, set out within the ideal 'working triangle' of cooker, sink and work space. Cutting down on the distance you have to walk to get anything is the idea behind the most effective kitchen layouts. Obviously, for some of us, the shape of our kitchens precludes this. If you think about it, however, a large square kitchen is not always the best option: just think of the amount of wasted floor-space that you have to walk across on a regular basis. Often, smaller kitchens can work far better. The secret is organization - and not letting dirty dishes get out of hand! This brings me to the appliances necessary to make a space saving kitchen a reality.

Even in the tiniest of kitchens it is possible to fit in a dishwasher. It doesn't have to be a full-size model: there are plenty of table-top and slimline models available nowadays. Haier, for instance, produces two different models of smaller-than-average dishwashers. The first model is a four-setting table-top model and, at just 40lbs, can be stored away when not in use. This model has a plastic interior and hooks up to the kitchen tap with a tap adapter and measures 21.25 inches x 19.5 inches x 17.37 inches. They also make a six-place model which weighs 77lb and which offer a couple of benefits not found in the smaller model. There is a choice of wash cycles with this model and a delayed start option. The base is fitted with casters to make moving it around a bit easier when not being used.

Another option for the space saving kitchen is for your dishwasher to be fitted into a drawer, with models which have the option of fitting single drawers or double drawers. Each of these Kitchen Aid dishwashers features a selection of five cycles and are certified by Energy Star. Kitchen Aid also makes an in-sink option for particularly small dish loads. This model is quite deep and can double up as an extra sink and comes with an integral cutting board and hot-pots' resting placement. The in-sink model can run four cycles for up to five place settings. This model has to be the ultimate in space saving options and perfect for the space saving kitchen.

The Estimating Kitchen Remodel

When it comes to making changes to the way your kitchen looks estimating kitchen remodel costs is usually the first step. In coming up with an estimate you need to identify the items that you need to change and the type of changes that you are going to effect. The types of changes you put into place will be related to many things.

Are you going to go for a new kitchen layout or maintain the existing one? The kind of materials that you are going to use will have an impact on the overall cost. Most kitchens mainly comprise of units made out of chip board. Chip board is not very durable unless it comes coated with some other water resistant material. You could also opt for genuine wood units or ones made of stainless steel.

Compare the costs of the different materials taking the issue of durability into consideration. Another thing that will determine how much you are going to spend is who going to carry out the remodeling. You could either opt to do it yourself or get a contractor to do the job. There are contractors who will be happy to come to your house and help you with estimating kitchen remodel costs for free.

They will come and look at the scope of work involved and come up with a rough figure of how much your intended repairs will cost. You must understand that remodeling the kitchen yourself will only be cheaper if you know how to do it. Also if you have all the necessary equipment needed to finish the project and if you have lots of free time available.

It is really of no benefit trying to do it yourself if you risk doing a shoddy job that won't look nice at all. Estimating kitchen remodel costs will be more accurate if you make use of a professional. Remember to explore all your options first.

Best Painting Your Very Own Landscape

It is easy to admire a nice piece of art. A beautiful painting of a landscape captures the attention of the beholder and begs him to notice every detail.

The precision evident in most pieces echoes back to the hard work done by a painter to make his work as true to life as possible. A skilled and practiced hand can make a viewer feel as though he were looking over a real scene.

Many who see such works assume that they would never be able to craft a masterpiece themselves. It is true that painting does take quite some time to master, and initial attempts by an amateur probably would not measure up to the works of a master.

It should be remembered, however, that painting is also an acquirable skill. In order to attain the goal of painting a good piece of art, a person must practice the techniques that great painters have taken years to master.

Producing an image of a landscape does involve a process, but it is not impossible. By using the appropriate materials and taking the right steps, anyone can produce a fairly convincing work of art.

Most painters do not paint images they have imagined. Rather, they take a picture of a landscape that they wish to paint or actually set up a canvas at the exact spot.

Your first step toward painting a landscape is to find a subject. Think of a place that conjures up feelings of admiration and awe.

Choosing an appropriate subject is vital. If you just take a picture of the spot, rather than setting up shop there, you can tape the picture to your easel so that it is always in view.

When you get ready to paint, put all the paints you will need onto your palette. Putting them on in the same order each time will allow you to work more quickly and effectively.

If you are working with oils, you will want to prepare a carrier. The purpose of the carrier is to protect the paint after it dries.

You must also choose an appropriate brush. Mid-sized brushes are good for covering the canvas in color.

Once you have selected your brush, you are ready to mix the color with which you will cover the canvas. The color you should use is raw sienna because it will allow you to blend other pigments over it, later on.

Be sure to mix the paint with turpentine, or another paint-thinning agent. Turpentine will make the paint thinner and, thus, dry faster.

Use your mixture to draw out the basic forms that you see either in nature or in your photograph. This sketch does not need to be too dark.

When you have everything outlined, begin filling in the sky. If more than one color will be used, first use only the color that is most prevalent.

Next, put in the main colors present in your landscape, as well as the shadowy areas. You should take a break at this point and allow the paint to dry.

Let the canvas stand for about two days. You can use this time to clean the brushes you have used.

Begin cleaning the brushes by wiping the excess paint off them with a piece of newspaper or a rag. Then separately use several mineral turps to cleanse the brush.

Do not mix the turps. Instead, pour each from its container into the can which you will use to clean the brushes, and return each to its respective container, once you're done.

After your work has dried, you can begin filling in the various parts of the landscape. There are a few tips to remember when adding each layer of the landscape.

Anything that is far away should appear lighter and less detailed than foreground items. Almost the same rule applies to shadows: if they're in the foreground, they should be dark, and if they're farther away, they should be lighter.

Also, try to make your painting more visually appealing by splitting it into thirds. Lastly, thicken your paint, using carriers, with each new layer.

When you are done, you will have created your very own landscape. Take pride in it and then make another one!

Best of Advice On Comparing Composite Decking To Wood From General Contractors Seattle

While real wood is still the traditional favorite when it comes to building a deck on a home, theres a new option available called composite decking. There are a lot of benefits to composite decking, and its available in a variety of colors. You can even get composite decking that looks like real wood. This article looks at how composite decking compares to wood decking, including whats in it, and why you might want to choose it for your brand new deck building project.

What Its Made Of

Composite decking is made of sawdust and plastic that contains color, a bonding agent, and preservative. After melting and mixing these ingredients together, the mix goes into a mold for drying. When it comes out, you have an incredibly strong plank that can even resemble real wood when put into a mold that has a wood grain design.

When you pick up a plank of composite decking, youll notice its hard and heavy. It will last years longer than a wooden deck, and you can cut, nail, screw, and build with composite decking just as you can with wood.

Environmentally Viable

One big plus for composite decking is that its environmentally viable because its made using recycled materials. The fact that composite decking saves trees is a big plus for many people, even above the fact that composite decking will not attract pests, and it wont rot even in the harshest weather.

Colors And Wood Styles

Composite decking typically comes in styles that look like real wood, including the most commonly used types of wood for building decks. Not only do they resemble deck building woods like redwood planks, but theyre also the same color as these planks. Since the color is added during the mixing process, the color runs all the way through composite decking planks. It doesnt just sit on top of the planks like paint that can peel or flake away with time. Its permanent coloring all the way through.

In addition to wood colors, you can also get composite decking in a variety of other colors that make it look like painted wood. The good thing about these planks is you get the look of painted or stained wood without having to paint or stain. Since the color runs all the way through, you dont have any painting or staining maintenance to worry about either.

Other Benefits

Composite decking also offers a number of other benefits. One great benefit is these planks will not attract mold or mildew that can make them slippery. In fact, composite decking is slip resistant, even when wet. Since composite decking is a solid piece, you dont have to worry about it splintering or even about getting splinters when running your hand across the handrail, or walking on these planks barefoot. Theyre also strong and long lasting in any type of climate extreme cold, glaring sun, lots of rain, and more.

If youre planning to build a deck, or you need to replace your homes existing deck, hire general contractors Seattle to ensure a safe and secure deck, and consider giving composite decking a try.

Lovely How To Use Pond Dye

Ponds are very important to homeowners and hobbyist. The natural beauty and unexplainable feel of these water features make individuals become much closer to nature. The sight of koi fish that teeters vigorously into the water gives God sent happiness.

However, the beauty of ponds is often ruined by algae and other unnecessary predators that lurk in the pond. Algae are very hard to combat once they grow excessively and invade the water. Many reckless and new pond owners would resort to using herbicides and algaecides to kill algae easily, completely unaware that those products will kill their precious pond. Copper Sulfate, Diquat, Endothall and Floridone are common chemical treatment products used to control algae.

Remember that theres no overnight cure for algae. If you want to kill algae, you should prevent the factors that trigger their growth. One of the reasons for excess algae growth is too much sunlight; this is why summer is the favourite season of algae. This problem requires natural pond algae treatment through the use of pond water dye.

Pond dye is the best and natural alternative to chemicals and algaecides. Like its neighbours, algae need sunlight to grow and nutrients to flourish. Algae grow when it absorbs too much sunlight at the bottom of the pond or called the photic zone. By adding pond dye, it lessens the amount of sunlight that could generate algae growth at the bottom. This acts as shade so the sunlight will not be able to penetrate through the bottom where algae are preparing for attack. However, dye will not affect emergent plants such as cattails and other floating plants. This doesnt work aggressively on shallow, but proven effective when used for the ponds bottom.

The effectiveness of pond dye varies on the period of usage, water shed, dosage and maintenance. The best time to apply pond dye is before spring to prepare immediately before the water warms up. You should be careful when changing water because it could contaminate your pond. You can achieve the right color easily because most of these dyes react on the dosage or water volume, which is usually a four acre foot per gallon or concentrated quart. Typically it is good for one acre pond with average depth of four feet. Maintaining the shade throughout the season will tame those algae. If you notice the color is fading, then add more dye into the water.
Simply pour the dye around the edge of the pond and the running water will naturally dissolve the particles within 24 hours. Dont worry because it wont discolour your favourite kois and plants. There are different shades to choose from: blue, black, blue and black combination, and blue/yellow combination. The dark blue dye looks more natural compared to other shades. You can buy the pond dye from your favourite garden centre or pet stores. However, be careful with your aging pond because it need more maintenance compared to new ones. You should add aeration system and beneficial bacteria to boost the effectiveness of pond dye.

Nice What You Ought To Find Out About Decking Along With The Possibilities That Are Available.

Gaining access to the decks may be done through the main dwelling or an outdoor stairway. Decks can be a fantastic substitute for natural stone features and they also render the garden or pool spaces larger in size. Almost all decks are hidden from the unforgiving sunlight by pergolas or canopies in order to restrict the sun-generated damage to the solid wood and in addition they also feature a railing to provide basic safety to the men and women utilizing these products. In larger buildings, decks are most often at the very top and are a great spot for individuals to admire the view. Two of the materials that decks are made from are timber or amalgamated decking. Timber decks are essentially the most well-liked of these two. A significant element leading to this inclination tends to be that solid wood decking is far more economical over time as it holds up longer compared to the composite decking.

Even so, solid wood does need more routine maintenance than amalgamated decking for instance sealing, staining and painting. Staining your deck will help to protect it against environmental sun damage and in addition it gives elegance to the natural wood finish. Cedar, Redwood and Pinewood are the most commonly used woods within the decking sector. Cedar is definitely a hardwood which inherently is able to withstand damage by means of bugs, it is found in exotic forests. The Redwood's qualities are virtually comparable to Cedar even so they differ in coloring. Pinewood can be obtained from long standing forests and it's called a soft timber. When Pinewood is used in decking it has to be pressure treated to begin with so that it can endure extremely cold wet weather.

Composite decks are an alternative solution to timber decks. Amalgamated decks have plenty of advantages over timber decks as they are usually pest, splinter and environmental sun damage immune. Amalgamated decks look very much like solid wood, but they do not require the large amount of maintenance like timber decks do. The elements cause it to be more costly; nevertheless, fiscally speaking it needs fewer expenses as time passes. The primary concern with composite decks is that you need to be cautious as to what you wash them with, soapy water or deck wash can destroy the moulds. Making a decision to build a deck is reasonably effortless. Building a place within the ease of your home in which families can enjoy themselves outside will be the enjoyable part.

Designing the deck in addition to deciding what you want it to be manufactured from will end up being a little more challenging than simply choosing to start building the deck. No matter what choice you make, what essentially matters the most will be the durability and beauty of the deck and that it provides safety and excellent enjoyment meant for loved ones. Never ever worry about how and where to find the correct materials to work with. Many merchants worldwide provide many different supplies for decking along with the additional important elements necessary for the construction. The majority of the stores that provide the decking products will even have a professional at hand to provide you with suggestions.

The Design Your Backyard Around a Fire Pit

Family and friends will gravitate to your backyard when you add a fire pit to your patio. The friendly warmth and glow of a burning fire has been bringing people together for centuries and continues to do so today. You can purchase a fire pit that will go with any backyard design, from basic to sophisticated, and in styles that range from a classic round bowl to tables with fire pits in the center. When it comes to fire pits, there are plenty of choices so which is best for you?

Your first decision will be to have a permanent or portable model. A permanent fire pit is built in and usually burns natural gas from your home. This type often looks more like a fireplace but it makes a statement about your desire to be outdoors in the evening. Portable fire pits dominate the market place, and for the obvious reason - they can be moved. A portable unit allows you to move the fire pit around your backyard or even take it with you to the beach, camping or tailgating. The portable models come in many shapes, materials and sizes so you are sure to find one that will fit the design of your backyard area.

Your second decision will center around the fuel you will use in your fire pit. Wood burning models, continue to be the most popular, but many communities have now placed bans on wood burning so check your local ordinances first. Wood burning fire pits also require more open space around them, so make sure you have an area that is large enough. But for a true campfire experience there is nothing like the smell of burning logs and the crackle of a wood fire. Propane fire pits are becoming more popular every day. They offer easy on and off, leave no ashes to clean up, can be used in more locations and are environmentally friendly. A propane fire pit can easily be designed into a table which makes them even more functional.

Fire pits are a great addition to any backyard and will instantly be the centerpiece of you evening gatherings. Look for a good quality fire pit that is made to last and begin creating new memories for years to come.

About Ipe As a Bridge Decking Solution

When people are considering building an outdoor wood bridge, the choice of wood is often paramount as the single most important decision of the entire process. The wood used will influence not only the design of the bridge, but also its aesthetic value and its reliability and durability over time. Luckily, the choice is easier than one would imagine, as ipe wood is the clear choice when it comes to bridge building material. Why is this?

Ipe is a South American wood, most commonly harvested from the forests of Brazil. Ipe is hard, tough, resilient, strong, and resists weather wear, abrasion, and naturally occurring wood rot. Ipe is incredibly dense and hard. Because of this, it is also naturally resistant to fire and mold damage. In fact, ipe is so resilient that its fire rating is equivalent to that of concrete. Compare this to a more common cedar or walnut deck that, in the case of fire, will act as kindling. An ipe bridge will just about last forever.

Ipe is also beautiful. In its appearance, it is similar to mahogany. It makes a fine interior wood when it is shined and varnished. It has that dark, blood red brown that is so desirable in finished woods. You're guaranteed to love the look of an ipe deck.

With this in mind, let's look at ipe versus some common bridge woods.

Mahogany. Although mahogany is usually a good choice for high quality bridge material, there are some significant disadvantages compared to ipe. Firstly, mahogany wood has to be treated and re-sealed every few years, and every year if you want to maintain the wood for any length of time. Ipe does not need to be sealed at all except for on the ends of the lumber and will, even if left un-treated over the life of the bridge, will out last mahogany. If you treat and seal ipe deck wood, then it will last nearly forever. Additionally, since mahogany is used as an interior wood and in the production of consumer materials like guitars, the supply has been dwindling. Because of the diminishing supply, it is very possible to get lower grade and inferior mahogany. Twenty years ago, this was not a problem, but today, a lot of the mahogany on the market is of an inferior quality.

Cedar and pine. Unfortunately, most bridges are constructed out of either cedar or treated pine. Both of these woods are susceptible to rot, particularly in wet climates or in climates that experience extremes in temperature. Pine is also a fire hazard.

Ipe is rated higher than cedar and pine in durability and resiliency, and also rated much higher in terms of appearance. If you are interested in building the best bridge possible, you should choose ipe.

New Transforming Your Outdoor Space

Your yard and garden are places that you can spend countless hours relaxing if you want to. Luckily, there are some things that you can add to the yard or garden that will make it a more ideal place for you to spend time, or will simply better the results of your efforts. Some things are quite little but others will make a big difference in what you are able to grow as well as how efficient your outdoor space is.

You can transform your outdoor space with something as small and seemingly insignificant as garden wind chimes. Wind chimes come in many different shapes and sizes and if you like this sort of thing you will find that the chimes offer a welcoming sound each time the wind blows. If your garden is near your bedroom you may even enjoy being lulled to sleep by the chimes or simply place them by a hammock or a chair that you keep in the yard. Wind chimes are always a great choice when you are looking to make small changes to your outdoor space.

Another way in which you can transform your outdoor space and even make it more efficient is with carport kits. Carport kits come in many different shapes and sizes, allowing you to put together a tent like apparatus that will allow you to park your car in the shade. If you don't have a garage or you use it for storage you may find that your car is always exposed to the elements. Inspirational 5 Easy Steps to Plan Your New Deck

Step 1

This step is the easiest, take a tour of your neighborhood and see the different styles of decks that are built and how they are attached to the house. Look through a few home improvement magazines.

What do you like or dislike about them?

Things to look for:

Is the deck railing built with the deck or is it a custom deck railing system
Where are the deck stairs placed in relation to the house
Do the decks have deck lighting on the railing, post caps, or step lights
What kind of material is the deck built of,cedar, redwood, composite decking material, or a combination of material
Is the deck attached to the house or is it a free standing deck

Step 2

In this step you will determine how you will use your new deck.

Will you use it for entertaining, weekend cookouts, or just relaxing after a hard days work?

Once you have determined the primary use of your deck you can then calculate the size to build your new deck.

A simple way to do this is to cut out some cardboard silhouettes (chairs, tables, grills, storage benches, planters, etc.)  and place them in the location where you plan to build your deck. This will give you a good visual of how big your deck will be. You can then modify the size and shape according to your needs.

Step 3

Now that you have decided on where to put your new deck and what size your are going to build your deck, you need to decide what type of deck lumber and material you are going to use.

Here are some of the most common deck building lumber:

Green Treated Pine, usually the least expensive and can be stained.
Cedar, an excellent choice it is long lasting and will weather to a light gray over time. Cedar can also be stained or treated to protect the wood over time.
Redwood, another excellent choice for you deck, also weathers to a light gray and can also be stained or treated to make the wood last longer and enhance the appearance.
Composite Decking, there are quite a few different types and styles of composite decking material out there that you can choose from. Just Google composite decking and look at all your choices.

The claim to fame for the composites is they are low maintenance, not maintenance free.

You will still need to power wash the deck and keep it but it does eliminate the  staining  you will have on a wood deck.

Step 4

Now is the time to decide if you are going to add some type of deck lighting to your deck. You can choose from many different styles to fit your decor. You can add low voltage deck lighting to the post caps, the deck railing, the deck steps, and you can also add recessed lighting in the deck floor to really set your deck apart.

Step 5

This step is optional, but it's one I use. It is the use of deck design software. the software package is easy to use and it will let you view your deck in 3D.

The programs are a simple drag and drop interface that will let you see you deck in various sizes and styles, plus some will let you calculate your deck package and give you a ball park cost estimate.

Adorable Kitchen Extractor Fan

The kitchen extractor fan, also widely known as a cooker hood, is typically a machine that is designed to draw up fumes, pollutants, and airborne grease to keep the air in your home clean and healthy. This is especially important for enclosed areas and smaller apartments as it is not good to breathe polluted air and vapors. In most cases these machines are installed directly over top of your oven so it can more efficiently draw up the polluted air from the source. They contain internal filters so that they can provide proper kitchen ventilation and recirculate cleaner air throughout your home.

The most popular style of kitchen extractor fan uses ducts in order to draw out the polluted air from the inside of the home and dispel it on the outside. This is the preferred model type since it is the most efficient for removing air completely. There is another option available that does not use ducts for the kitchen ventilation and instead uses a filter to clean the stale air and then recirculate it throughout the home. This is not as efficient as the ducted type, but some individuals may have to settle for it due to budget or space constraints.

One problem that some individuals may have is that their kitchen space is too small for them to install a full cooker hood, so in cases such as this an island type of kitchen extractor fan can be used. It will typically be installed in the center of the room. It is difficult for this type to be connected to duct work, so they will typically use the charcoal filters. There are some however that do feature a chimney that can draw out the stale air to the outside.

Besides residential homes, it is very important for professional structures such as restaurants to have a kitchen extractor fan installed as well. These models are usually powerful because they will have to draw out the smoke and steam from a much larger area and at a faster speed. This makes work a lot easier for the kitchen staff that will be spending a large amount of time in this confined area. The two most popular styles are the axial and the centrifugal. Both are excellent, but the centrifugal type is more powerful and can carry out the polluted air over a longer stretch of duct work.

Whichever model of kitchen extractor fan you eventually choose, it is important that you not try to save money by choosing a poorly constructed model. This is a sensitive piece of equipment that you will want to last for awhile. A decent machine will usually cost you between $ 400 and $ 2,500 but there are some that are much more expensive than this, even as high as $ 20,000 in some cases.

Inspirational Plan to Dredg Your Pond

The matter of dredging needed to be concerned if the place you live stands a lake or pond.  Hopefully your community has had a professional reserve study performed which includes funds allocated to a future dredging project. If you have reviewed this line item, you may see that it is one of the most costly projects that a community will ever undergo. Still, you may find that even though funds have been allocated, these funds may not be adequate to cover the scope of work needed. In order to prepare for the "big dig" that may be around the corner, here are a couple of tips to prolong the time needed between dredging projects:

Bathymetry: Your lake is a dynamic and unique ecosystem. Bathymetry allows you to better understand the changes that are going on in your lake. Bathymetry is the science of three dimensional lake mapping where surface area is shown with the corresponding depths. It shows the underwater mountains and valleys. Specifically it shows the very shallow parts of your pond. It also gives information on the quantity, location, and types of sediments sitting at the bottom of your pond. When compared to original plans, it will also allow you to calculate the rate at which your pond is filling in with sediment. This information allows you to tailor your dredging planning and budgeting to be more site and cost specific, reducing the unknown and taking the guess work out of your long term reserve planning and budgeting.

Aeration: Aeration is an important part to any lake management strategy but specifically it can help prolong the amount of time before dredging is required. The movement of water generated by aeration keeps sediments in a suspended stated not allowing them to settle out and add layers to the bottom of your pond. By adding oxygen and movement to the water, you can slow the accumulation of organic sediment and even help to break down a vast majority of sediments through the microbial processes that are enhanced by the aeration. Minimization of organic sediment accumulation on the bottom of the pond will greatly extend the life of your pond and push back the timeline for dredging.

Fish Stocking (Grass Carp): Fish stocking can be another effective way of increasing time before dredging is required. Stocking your pond with fish, specifically grass carp, is a biological control against nuisance aquatic vegetation and algae. These fish are herbivores and only go after the vegetation in your pond. Removing harmful vegetation improves the "look" of your pond and has the added benefit of removing organic matter that can build up and increase the "filling" of your pond. By consuming these plants the fish are effectively removing any of the nutrients that might be recycled and used for growth of new plants.

Biological Augmentation: Another way to decrease the nutrient build up in your pond is through biological augmentation which is the addition of natural bacteria and enzymes to your pond or lake, also known as "biologicals". Biologicals are naturally occurring bacteria that utilize excess nutrients in the water for their own growth. This means that they remove the food source that algae and other nuisance vegetation need to grow. These bacteria are also responsible for helping to break down the "organic sludge" sitting on the bottom of your pond. Coupled with aeration, biologicals effectively remove nutrients and break down the organic layer slowing the "filling" of your pond.

Overall there are multiple ways to prolong the time before you need to dredge your pond. These are just a few of the more effective strategies to help your pond from filling up. Through proper pond management you can have a pond that looks great and gives you adequate time to plan for your "big dig."

Best What Fireplace Doors Do You Need?

In this modern day and age, fireplaces do not necessarily have to look like what they used to look like, bricks all around, and some sand in the middle, with nothing to cover all that mess up after. Nowadays, the brand new fireplaces can be installed instead of built from the ground up. You can even customize what type or what look your fireplace would have. It can look as modern as your television set, or as old-fashioned as a cottage fireplace. But the most important thing is to make sure that your fire place stays in place with a brand new set of fireplace doors.

Doors designed for your fireplace are more advantageous to have than just to have your fireplace on the wall of your living room without anything to cover it up. These doors were made to keep the smoke from coming inside your home and ruining a nice, warm evening. While the fire is burning, you would also like to get rid of the soot that can fill up the floor after the fire runs out in the fireplace. These doors will help keep the sparks from the flames and the soot in place and let it stay in your fireplace where they belong.

Fireplace doors come in different packages. Some fireplace doors are made of materials such as brass, some are brass-plated to look like brass doors, some are made of steel, and others, and are more common, are made of glass. It really depends on you whether you would like to go with any of these types of materials, but you should know that whatever material you use as you fireplace doors, the number one rule would be that it should be fire-proof, keeping the flames out and the doors should not cause the fire but contain the fire. Fireplace doors should also add appeal to your fireplace, making it look more attractive by employing different designs, such as stained glass on fireplace glass doors. You can add your own style and customize your doors for your fireplace, or choose to buy them ready-made.

Maintaining and cleaning your fireplace can pose a tedious task. But you do not have to worry about having these modern fireplace doors. You only need to clean them after using the fireplace and at least once a year, you should clean your fireplace to make sure dirt and dusts do no accumulate. You can use a normal cleaning detergent for your glass fireplace doors, and make sure you use a clean and soft washcloth. Since fireplace doors keep the soot and smoke from coming inside the house, you only need to worry about cleaning soot off from the fireplace and the inside of your fireplace doors.

Since they are easily maintained, doors for your fireplace can be considered cost-efficient and another cost-efficient reason to have them is that they are not really very expensive. You can choose to customize your own fireplace doors by building them on your own with the help of your family. You can purchase materials at thrift stores or hardware stores that sell by the bulk, and follow a set of instructions which you can download online on how to customize or make your own fireplace doors. They are quite simple to make, but you would have to ask for professional help if you have no experience in making furniture.

In any home, whether you would like to redecorate or just add a bit more to your living room, you will find that installing fireplace doors to your fireplace can add a touch of magic and relaxing ambiance. Not only does it ensure the safety of your home, but it also makes sure that the heat that comes from your fireplace travels throughout the room without the fire, soot, or smoke ever coming out. You can enjoy cold winter nights with your family or family gatherings where your living room fireplace can become the biggest new attraction at your home.

Nice Compare Pine Wood to Ipe Decking

Ipe decking is world-renowned for its durability and natural resistance to mold, mildew, fungus, and insects. In addition, because ipe wood features natural oils and is extremely dense, it also is able to resist both rot and decay more than any other hardwood and composite decking material. Many homeowners and deck builders prefer to build a deck with ipe over pine because of those unique natural qualities.

The main reason why people end up settling for a pine wood deck is because it is cheap. Aside from that, pine wood has been the bane of many homeowners who thought that pine decking would be easy to maintain and look good for years. What companies won't tell you about pine wood and pressure treated pine is this; the chemicals used to pressure treat the pine have the potential to be very harmful.

In fact, up until 2003, pine wood that was turned to pressure treated decking was infused with Arsenic. That's right a chemical that is used for rat poison and various other poisons was used on decks throughout the country. Another sad fact is that it was not uncommon for one 12 foot 2x6 piece of pine wood to contain around 27 grams of Arsenic. That one single pressure treated pine board has enough arsenic in it to kill over 200 people. It wasn't until there were too many lawsuits and bad press to count that, in 2003, the industry voluntarily stopped using arsenic on pine wood. Currently the chemicals used to treat a pine deck are Amine Copper Quat (ACQ)and Copper Azone (CA). The jury is still out on whether these chemicals have any long-term side effects.

Also, aside from the chemicals another reason why ipe decking is vastly superior to pressure treated pine wood is because over time a pine deck ends up looking very unappealing and can even prove harmful. If you've ever seen a pine deck that was a couple of decades old, you'll notice right away that the pine wood eventually starts to check and crack and looks extremely weathered. Also, many children and even cautious adults often get splinters from this inferior decking.

Last, but not least, there money to consider. Yes, building a deck made of ipe wood does require more of an investment. However, when you compare pine wood to ipe decking, the overall return on investment is crystal clear. Pine decking has a higher overall cost when you consider that it costs more to maintain thanks to treatments and even the replacement of whole pine wood deck boards. On the other hand, a deck made from ipe wood can last for decades before it requires treatment. You do have two choices when it comes to treating ipe and it's all a matter of taste. For the most part though, it is recommended that you use deck oil for the first and second year. Then depending on climate and exposure to the elements, you may be able to treat your ipe deck every other year.

Also, when you consider that because of its overall density, an ipe deck is much less likely to bow, crack, or decay, you can spend many wonderful years spending quality time with your family on an ipe deck that is safe and beautiful all at the same time. Be sure to work with only highly reputable deck builders and lumber companies before you move ahead with your deck building plans. Ultimately, the decision is yours and making sure you take proper care of your deck is critical.

Inspirational Outdoor Deck Decor For Summer

Many of us find our outdoor deck becoming a grey area behind our house, which has many uses (such as storage and a place to hang washing) but has no real purpose. If this is the case, or you simply feel that you are not making the best of your deck, it's time for a summer overhaul. Instead of starting with home and garden type magazines to get ideas, which are usually far too ambitious for the average home owner, rather look to friends and even neighbors for inspiration. If you've admired other people's outdoor decks for their functionality and elegant designs, it's time to get your deck looking just as great.

Practical deck decor suggestions:

1. Spring clean your deck

Before you start with the enjoyable side of decorating, you need to get back to basics. Wait for a sunny weekend and then remove all outdoor deck furniture, sweep the deck's surface and spray an oxalic acid solution on the deck which will kill microorganisms and restore its pH balance. Remove the acid with a power-sprayer and then start looking for rotten wood or damaged planks. Once you've replaced the damaged planks you should give your entire deck a light sanding and use an appropriate sealant or semi-transparent stain to protect your wood until next summer.

2. Add a handrail

Adding a handrail will cordon off your deck so you can use it much like a room or extension of your house. You can also paint the handrail to match your painted garden furniture. For example, if you have white-washed garden furniture and dark blue umbrellas on your outdoor decking, you can paint the top of the rail blue, and the bars, white.

3. Consider the functionality of your outdoor deck and design accordingly

Before you start rearranging your garden furniture, you need to ask yourself what you want your deck for. If you like to hold family barbecues on the outdoor deck, ensure that you have enough garden furniture. When considering the placement of the furniture, light a fire in your grill and see where the smoke travels on an average summer's day, then place your furniture on the other side of the deck from the smoke. Keep the more comfortable furniture, such as rocking chairs closest to your back door.

4. Revamp second hand furniture for outdoor use on your deck

If you find you need to invest in more furniture, rather than spending a fortune, see if you can get a few secondhand wood pieces and overhaul them. You can either sand off the paint and varnish them up nicely, or give them a fresh layer of waterproof paint. White is usually the best color to use as other colors may look tacky. If you need to add some color, get a few pot plants, a bright outdoor umbrella or some matching cushions for your chairs which you can take outside on special occasions.

5. Talk to your local nursery about pot plants

Clay plant pots are also easy to recycle by painting with terracotta paint. See if you can get hold of a few second hand pots and paint them. Then decide on one or two colors for the flora on your outdoor deck; a bright red and green is usually a good combination. Go to your local nursery and get plants that do well in pots, such as geraniums, and place them in the corners of your deck for that last touch of class. You can also work your outdoor lighting, so that you can see your decor at night and watch the stars on your deck in the warm evenings.

All your hard work will not go unnoticed. Before you realize if, your outdoor deck will become a source of envy among your friends. All that's left to do is to invite some good company, take a bottle of wine outdoors and enjoy your elegant deck.

Beautiful 6 Things You Should Know About Landscape Design

Landscape design is not as simple as it looks. You will have to know how to design and plan landscapes; decide how to make those design plans a reality; work with gardeners and nursery men; know about various design patterns which people of various cultures like and know about plants and animals that feed on them. Do not get confused. Landscape design is not like landscape architecture. And you can go to school and learn about it there.

Much thought and plan is behind gardens and parks with beautiful landscapes. The truth is that a few of them can involve a very long time for planning, designing and integration of different design elements and also planting and inclination towards plants. Scottsdale landscape designers are professionals who are trained and skilled to do these tasks. These professionals can transform gardens or parks into works of art and pay close attention to colors, textures, function, form and other design elements. In this article, you will learn more information about landscape design:

The focus is on landscape planning and design plan implementation

Landscape designers focus on the planning of a garden or landscape and mapping out the consecutive steps that should be taken to execute the plan. A good landscape plan requires a lot of planning. They may ask for instructions from the owner of the property, make sketches or photographs, or even use drafting tools. In order to execute the plan, they will also measure the property and come up with a list of materials and tools that will be necessary. Using their extensive knowledge, landscape designers begin their plans. The landscape plan and execution will include components from fields like aesthetics, horticulture and design.

There is a possibility that it will entail collaborating with different fields

Landscape design may involve the overlapping of various talents and technical expertise as the project evolves from the planning phase to the actual site construction. This is something else entirely

Landscape design and landscape architecture are quite similar, with one basic difference. Landscape design, quite simply, is a narrower scope than is landscape architecture. Landscape architecture includes both the design and engineering phases of design. In most places, landscape architects are required to have a license in order to work.

It considers various objective factors

Apart from being an artistic pursuit, there is a lot of science involved in landscape design like topography, botany, etc.

Educational institutions may be teaching it

Only through apprenticeship the past landscape designers were trained. The first institutional education was introduced, for landscape design in the early 1900?s. During the recent past the program has been made accessible to almost all segments of the general public. Many universities have landscaping departments. This means that they offer landscape instructions and programs.

Culture and nature can co-exist is evident from landscape designs.

The Best How to Choose Koi Fish

Those two reasons alone make them enough to fall in love with Koi fish. If you are considering purchasing Koi for your garden pond then this article is for you.

The first thing that's recommended for you to do is to acquire as much information as you possibly can about Koi fish. This information could be acquired from your local pet shop owners, a reputable breeder and even online.

The staff of the breeder and pet shops should be knowledgeable about Koi fish and should be able to answer lots of questions for you. One of the questions you may need to ask is if the Koi Fish are imported or from a local source? Of those two choices the imported Japanese Koi fish is usually going to be the highest quality.

If it is at all possible for you to visit fish farms, where Koi are raised, that would be an excellent thing for you to do. While there check the conditions at the farm. See how well the fish are being taken care of, how they are maintained and the overall general cleanliness of the farm. The Koi fish farms ponds water should be clean and odorless; their supplies for sale should be of excellent quality.

As you probably already realize Koi fish come in unique stunning color patterns with no two Koi ever being exactly alike. Each Koi has all of their own unique colors and markings. Did you know however that the young Koi will change as they grow more mature? As they mature and grow their colors will usually darken so remember this when shopping for your new Koi fish.

Koi fish are generally very social creatures and will normally be seen socializing and swimming with other Koi. If by chance you see one or two swimming alone off to themselves then I would recommend avoiding these fish. Chances are they are not healthy fish.

A healthy Koi fish will swim effortlessly and glide through the water with ease. They should have no jerking type motions and no twitching when swimming. Their gills should move at an even pace and rhythmically together. If you do happen to notice that they are only breathing through one gill or if they have any redness around their gills this is also a sign that they could have an infection called gill flukes. This would be another sign that they are not healthy Koi.

When observing a healthy Koi's body it should be gently tapered, well defined and thick. There should be no visible signs of damage, any ulcers or spots of discoloration on the fish. Their scales should lay flat against the fish with no lesions of any kind.

Experts cannot agree on the amount of Koi fish that should be kept in a garden pond. The best answer really is that it would depend upon the size of your pond as well as the efficiency of the filtration system.

Your garden Koi pond should be at least 1000 gallons big with a minimum water depth of 4 foot. As excited as you are to go out and purchase your new Koi it is very important to make sure your pond has been built and has an excellent filtration system already working. After these things have been accomplished then your pond is ready for all of your new Koi fish.

The Italian company has made a name for itself in recent years through its range of bright, colourful, retro-style fridges. Based on 50s designs, their FAB range in particular has become extremely popular with the union jack design a particularly famous model. Thankfully, though, the retro styling and bold colours are not substitutes for function.

Take the Smeg FAB28RCS fridge as an example of a retro kitchen appliance that covers both form and function well. This model comes in a Colour Stripe design, taking 50s colours and putting a modern twist on them. It also features a retro casing and handle design. However, the appliance also has an A+ energy efficiency class rating, has a freezing capacity of 2kg/24h and an automatic defrost function. You may pay a little more for the retro design, but you do not need to worry about your Smeg fridge’s performance.

Of course, Smeg do not just manufacture fridges and freezers. They do a large variety of retro kitchen appliances, including dishwashers and washing machines. Although the range of colours is not as wide as it is for their refrigeration range, Smeg can offer you almost a full compliment of retro appliances to give your kitchen a unique look. When it comes to finding a retro-style oven to fit in with the rest of your retro kitchen appliances, you may be facing a bit of a struggle. Smeg does not offer ovens or cookers in the same range as their retro fridges and dishwashers, and most companies do not cater for that style as much as Smeg does. However, if you are willing to look a little further, Britannia may have what you are looking for.

Britannia’s limited edition Couture range is difficult to find these days, but if you can get hold of the Cubism model, then your retro kitchen may be complete. You will have to pay around £5,000 for this model, but if you are willing to part with that amount of money then the red and black pattern of the Cubism model may be for you. If you are looking for something slightly cheaper, however, Falcon offer their 1092 Deluxe range cooker in a number of retro colours, including 50s cream and 70s lime green. This retro kitchen appliance also features single-handed ignition for easier hob use and six gas hobs on top of five heavy-duty shelves.

The cooker is extremely spacious and stylish and retails at about £4,000. So if you are determined to give your kitchen that retro look, you have plenty of options. From outrageously stylish Smeg FAB appliances to more reserved and fashionable appliances from companies like Falcon and Britannia cookers, there are plenty of retro appliances to suit your need. However, be warned: if you do want the style, you will have to pay a few hundred, and possibly even a few thousand pounds more than you would if you chose a traditional appliance.

Nice 6 Things You Should Know About Landscape Design

Landscape design may be learned at educational institutions and is different from landscape architecture. It focuses on landscape planning and the implementation of the design plan, involves collaboration with other disciplines, combines nature and culture as well as considering various objective factors.

Much thought and plan is behind gardens and parks with beautiful landscapes. Landscape designing is not easy. Some landscapes take years to plan and execute. It is not easy to plan, design and integrate all of the elements of a design and deal with the plants which require planting and must be taken care of. Scottsdale landscape designers are professionals who are trained and skilled to do these tasks. These professionals pay close attention to colors, textures, function, form and other design elements and can transform gardens and parks into works of art. In this article, you will learn more information about landscape design:

Landscape design is all about designing landscape plans and deciding how to implement the design plans that one comes up with

Landscape designers focus on the planning of a garden or landscape and mapping out the consecutive steps that should be taken to execute the plan. A cohesive landscape design results from a good plan. They may ask for input and instruction from the property owner, draw inspiration from various sources, take photographs of the property, make sketches and apply various drafting tools.

From the planning phase to the actual site construction, landscape design may involve the overlapping of various talents and technical expertise. Landscape designers cooperate with many other people. They may also integrate technologies such as computer software to help them plan more accurately and efficiently.

It combines nature and culture

Natural elements as well as cultural artifacts are combined to create an attractive landscape. Decisions about landscape modification are made by landscape designers whether it be to make some changes, totally replace existing layout, or to retain certain natural features. These professionals design a plan according to the preferences, and needs of the client.

This is something else entirely

Though they may share many similar technical functions and terms yet there is a basic difference between landscape design and landscape architecture. To put it simply, landscape architecture is broader in scope compared to landscape design. Landscape architecture includes both the design and engineering phases of design. A professional license is usually required for landscape architects.

Different factors are considered carefully

Apart from the artistic elements involved, landscape design also takes into consideration objective factors like the location's climate and microclimate, drainage system, topography, surrounding infrastructures and facilities, lighting system, natural plants present in the area and many other measurable factors.

This skill can be learned at institutions in your area

Earlier, landscape designers were trained just by apprenticeship. College education for landscape design has only existed since the early 1900?s. During the recent past the program has been made accessible to almost all segments of the general public. Certain universities have their own departments devoted to landscape design as well and provide relevant minor programs such as landscape engineering, landscape design history, fine arts, natural resources, horticultural botany and several others.

Culture and nature can co-exist is evident from landscape designs.

Best of What Every Backyard Needs

During the summertime, many families spend the majority of their time outdoors. While many may travel to nearby parks or campgrounds, there are many others that make the decision to stay right in their own backyard.

Those that regularly make the trip to nearby parks or campgrounds tend to wonder how their backyard can be fun. The reality is that there are a number of different ways that your backyard can be a fun and cheaper alternative to many public facilities.  This is because there literally are an unlimited number of family friendly backyard activities to choose from; however, to participate in these activities you may need to purchase some additional accessories. To better prepare for your next backyard adventure, you are encouraged to familiarize yourself with these activities and the equipment that they may require.

Outdoor sports are popular, family friendly activities. Outdoor sports are great for individuals of all ages, including young children, teens, and adults.  What is nice about playing outdoor sports is that there are a wide variety of different games that you can choose from. Many popular games include softball, baseball, basketball, soccer, kickball, volleyball, and badminton. When it comes to purchasing equipment for outdoor sports, the equipment needed will all depend on which games you and your family will be playing.

One of the most popular games to play outdoors is baseball or softball. With baseball or softball, you may find that your family already has the equipment that is needed to play. If you don't, most gloves, bats, and balls can be purchased for an affordable price. While baseball and softball can be considered an affordable outdoor sport, not all can be. If you are interested in playing basketball or volleyball, you may need to purchase large pieces of equipment. Most volleyball nets and basketball hoops are fairly expensive to purchase.  If money is not a factor, you should be able to purchase these items online or from most department stores or sports stores.

In addition to outdoor sports games, many families enjoy cooling off with water. If this seems like something your family would enjoy, you may want to consider purchasing a swimming pool, if you don't already have one. When it comes to purchasing swimming pools, most are a fairly large purchase. If in-ground pools or traditional aboveground pools are too expensive, you may be able to find a cheaper alternative.  In recent years, large inflatable swimming pools have been developed. In a way, these pools are similar to kiddie pools, but they can have water depths as high as three or four feet. If you have enough backyard space for one of these pools, they are a great and reasonably priced way to go for a swim.

The above mentioned equipment and accessories are important, but they are not the only things that you may want to purchase for your next backyard adventure. While outside, whether it be swimming or playing a game of baseball, you and your family may want a drink or a snack. Instead of running back into your house, you may want to think about brining these items outside with you. With a small cooler, you can easily store your perishable snacks and drinks.  By keeping plenty of drinks and snacks on hand, your family should be able to take quick outside break without having their fun interrupted.
