Modern Keeping Kids Safe Around the Fireplace

When the weather turns cold it is time to build a fire in the fireplace and enjoy some cozy family time around the hearth. But before you throw another log on, have you thought about keeping your family safe around the fire?

Every year scores of children are injured around home fireplaces. Some kids get burns other get cuts and broken bones from falling on brick and stone hearths. Even if you have a seemingly safe gas or electric fireplace, there is still a risk of burns. Before you start your first fire, take some time to make sure your fireplace and the surrounding area is safe.

If you have a raised hearth made of brick or stone, there is an increased risk of children falling and bumping themselves on the sharp edge. This is especially a risk for toddlers who are unsteady on their feet. There are a few ways you can make this edge safer for children. First of all, make sure the area around the hearth and fireplace is clear of furniture, toys, baskets, etc. Anything a child may trip on should be moved away from the hearth to create a safer environment.

Second, you could take the time to pad the edge with rolled up towels or blankets. Make sure you make a tight roll and secure it with duct tape. Of course this isn't a very attractive option, but it can be a temporary solution until you are able to come up with a better choice.

Another choice is to use a fireplace safety gate to protect kids and pets from the fireplace and hearth. These gates are attractive and can easily be put away when company comes. However, they look so nice you will probably be content to leave it in place. Not only will the gate protect from the rough edge of the hearth, but it will prevent little hands from touching the hot fireplace or stove and prevent burns.

Take the time to teach your children the importance of not touching the hot fireplace. Start while they are very young so they understand that the fireplace is off limits. Fireplace gates and other safety measures can only go so far in protecting your children from burns. If they learn the danger of fireplaces while they are young, they will understand to stay away from the fire when they are at other homes without a fireplace gate.

A cozy fire is a part of cold weather living. They are warm and inviting as long as you take the time to make sure your family is safe around the hearth!
